Blog post 15: Using LiveBinders for teaching and learning

Wow! That is the first word that comes to mind when using LiveBinders. This week I was a bit nervous doing this assignment because organization has never been my strong suit throughout my entire educational career, however, the ease of LiveBinders really calmed my nerves. Like I have said, I struggled with organization, even back in high school I would get a new binder every year and after a week a two it would go to shambles! Missing papers, missing homework assignments and missing documents that required parental signatures. LiveBinders is truly a website that can be utilized to organize anyone and everyone, even people who are not in the educational world.

I think LiveBinders is a great use for all levels middle school and above. I think that elementary students are too young to understand and appreciate everything that LiveBinders has to offer. I think that a great use of LiveBinder would be similar to the assignment we had, having students utilize LiveBinder to create a digital binder for a class.

Another assignment for students to utilize LiveBinders would be to have them consolidate their notes in an orderly fashion for a particular class. This can be done across the curriculum and across grade levels. In specific, a teacher can use Livebinder to check in on their students notes and keep them on track with assignments and whatnot.

Teachers can also use Livebinders to have students collaborate on a particular assignment. Each student can create a tab and store their notes and research. Students can then work with one another to edit, revise, update and improve their work. The tabs will give teachers the ability to grade each student for the content they are responsible for and also it will give students a sense of pride for the work they have completed.

Lastly, a great usage for LiveBinders would be a digital portfolio. During my high school days, we had a senior portfolio that we had to pass for graduation. However, back in the early 2000’s many family households still dial up internet. This digital portfolio will give students an organized, one stop shop place to display their work and demonstrate their growth over the course of their high school academic career. Assignments like this can then be used by the students for their college work and would set a good precedent for positive, good academic work habits to maintain throughout their years in college.

  2. Mike,
I like how you described LiveBnders with the word "Wow"...I too feel that is my same sentiment towards this great Web 2.0 application. You hit it right on the mark, when you talk about the capability to allow for collaboration between teacher and students and between students themselves. I really like how you provide the use of a digital portfolio during high school as well as throughout college. Thank for the great ideas!
