Grade Level: 9-12th Mathematics
I selected this lesson because statistics is a math subject
that is rooted in everyday life. Often, students will not see the correlation
of Algebra or Calculus with this normal lives, however, statistics are seen
every time they turn on the news or even walk/drive down the street. With an
intro to statistics lesson, the goals would be to define what statistics are
and how their used and also use that opportunity to open students eyes on how
statistics are often skewed and raise the question on if they can be trusted,
and if so how? If not, why? Even though it is in an introductory lesson, I
intend on having higher order thinking and critical thinking. During this
lesson, Web 2.0 tools that I can utilize successfully and effectively would be
Edmodo, Twitter, Prezi and Feedly. The Web 2.0 tools will be used by both the
students and I; with me primarily using Prezi and Edmodo and putting Twitter,
Feedly and Edmodo in the student’s hands.
My understanding of student interest is that interest levels
would be high. Students do not often hear about the ‘dark side’ of things or
are encouraged to go against the grain. Also, with implementing Web 2.0 tools
such as Twitter and Edmodo I believe that will also raise students interest
since Twitter is often a platform used by many students in their personal
lives.
I have yet to complete a list of all the activities that I
plan on including, however, I would use Twitter and Feedly for students to
conduct research in which they find an article or tweets with questionable
statistics. They would then have to describe what about the items they are
questionable, how so, and what would be required for the items to have their
questionability removed.
Mike,
ReplyDeleteI think that the students will be excited to be using Twitter, Feedly, and Edmodo. Students will be able to make connections especially if they already use these types of social media. These three tools are a perfect way of doing research, and I think it might diminish the risk of running into inappropriate content.
Hi Mike,
ReplyDeleteHats off to you for teaching Statistics! In my opinion, it is a hard concept to teach, but as you say, it is related to our daily live in ways that we didn’t think of. Almost any career path they choose will incorporate statistics in some way. I believe that by using Twitter and Feedly you will increase student’s interest in statistics and build on their knowledge.
Hello Mike,
ReplyDeleteI admire you trying to integrate technology in a mathematics class. Edmodo is an awesome tool that can be used in the class because you are able to assess the students with either an assignment, quiz or poll relating to the daily life. As reference to Twitter, might I suggest having you create a hashtag such as #calinmylife or something in that matter and then having your students and yourself post pictures and a brief description on something in their daily life that involved Calculus.
Mike,
ReplyDeleteI love your use of statistics in your final assignment.I think it is so important for students to be able to determine if the information they are receiving is reliable or not. One activity you might be able to incorporate is to have students research sample size. They could compile studies on feedly and determine if the research had adequate sample sizes.
